About Rwenzori Mountains National Park
Location
This mountain is located in south-western Uganda on the eastern side of the western Albetine Rift valley. Rwenzori lies along the border of Uganda with the Democratic Republic of Congo and also edges the DRC’s Virunga National park. The park is also located in Kabarole, Bundibugyo, as well as Kasese districts.
This national park was also started in 1991 and then designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1994 due to its exceptional natural beauty. It’s about 1,000km in size it has got the third highest mountain peak, waterfalls, glaciers as well as lakes. It’s also known for its fantastic plant life.

Climbing Trails to Rwenzori
Rwenzori Mountains are located in the western part of Uganda along the border with the Democratic Republic of Congo. The Mountains comprise of the highest point Margherita Peak which can be accessed following various climbing trails which are chosen by the travelers.
These include; the Central Circuit Trail, Kilembe Trail (Southern Circuit) and Bukurungu Wilderness Trail. These routes vary in difficulty, scenery, duration, and level of infrastructure taking different days to conquer the summit i.e 6 to 9 Days starting at the Nyakalengija base camp.
You follow through varying vegetation zones which include; forest – bamboo – heather – alpine – glacier, Bigo Bogs, Lake Bujuku, Kitandara Lakes.
Kilembe Trail is longer, more scenic, and less crowded approaching the Mountain from the South taking a period of 8 to 10 Days following through remote valleys (Nyamwamba, Nyamugasani), diverse terrain landscapes via luxury camps compared huts.
Bukurungu Wilderness Trail is the least developed and most adventurous route taking a period of 7 to 8 days and requires travelers to go wild camping.
When to Visit
Rwenzori Mountains are ideal to visit in mid-December to February and June to August.

Once inside the park, there are no roads—movement is entirely by trekking.
