Day 1: Kilembe to Sine camp to Kalalama

Detailed Itinerary of the 8 Days Rwenzori Trek via Kilembe
Day 1: Kilembe to Sine camp to Kalalama
You arrive at the Kilembe Gate offices where you are welcomed by the team of park rangers who take you through orientation about the Rwenzori trekking safari in Uganda.
You shall then be located into groups then later lead you on hike through the forest Zone where you may watch many wildlife animals like colobus monkeys, blue and L’Hoest Monkeys as well as the rare Ruwenzori Turaco. You will briefly stop at the Sine camp for lunch and later continue to trek up to Kalalama Camp at 3147m for dinner and overnight at Kalalama Camp.
Day 2: Kalalama Camp to Mutinda Camp
Breakfast then embark on trek through the Bamboo Zone consisting of steep climbs with numerous high steps. You shall then get to the resting point where you enjoy half day’s lunch and afterwards proceed along the heather zone via many streams, waterfalls and the usual green moss vegetation.
You will also walk through Giant heather trees till you reach Mutinda camp at 3.688m that was named after the Mutinda Peaks. It is from this point where you hike from upwards to the Mutinda Lookout at 3.925m requiring you a 90 minutes walk , plus 60 mins descent to the camp. Later, you shall arrive at the camp for dinner and overnight. Mutinda Camp.
Day 3: Mutinda Camp to Bugata Camp
Trek through the boggy terrain watching the wet vegetation and tussocks till you enter the Alpine Vegetation Zone known to have giant lobelia, groundsel and the everlasting flowers while crossing the Mutinda Valley.
Hike up the steep section to Namusangi Valley traversing many bogs as you ascend to Bugata Camp at 3.062m where you will have your dinner and an overnight. In the evening, you shall be briefed about what you will do the following day and then retire to your cabins for the night. Bugata Camp.
Day 4: Bugata to Hunwick’s Camp
Breakfast in the morning then continue with your trek to Hunwick’s Camp. You shall hike along the steep slopes traversing many bogs to Bamwanjara pass at 4.405n. En-route, enjoy breathtaking views of the snow caped peaks as you head on to rest in a candid shelter for lunch break.
You proceed through the lower and Upper Kachope lakes and McConnell’s Prong which are usually muddy and steep. You shall then arrive at Hunwick’s camp in the evening for dinner and an overnight. Hunwick’s Camp.
Day 5: Hunwick’s Camp to Magherita Camp
Breakfast then start your day with walking along the ridge crossing many wet areas and small rivers flowing from Mount Baker and the fresh fields pass. You shall proceed on trek up to Scott Elliott Pass through the ridge of Mt Stanley to Margherita Camp at 4,485 meters.
The Magherita camp is sheltered with a ring of rocks which were used by an Italian Prince Luigi Amadeo di Savoia and Duke of the Abruzzi. You shall reach in the late evening to the camp for Dinner and Overnight. Magherita Camp.
Day 6: Magherita Camp to the Summit
You will wake up at 2:00am for breakfast then set off for the longest and strenuous walk to the summit of Magherita which starts at 3:00am to summit till the Magherita peak of Mount Stanley.
You shall transfer for a period of 6 to 8 hours. As you approach the summit, you shall watch the sunrise hit the glaciers which melt. You shall take many photos to keep with you with other hikers. You shall proceed with your hike over the glaciers close, after then you will climb to an exposed section of the rock, which is bolted and roped, to get on the ridge running up to the top of the Magherita peak at 5.109m
After reaching the peak, you will be endowed by the stunning scene of the whole country, as you are now at the highest point of the country. Lunch will be served at the peak, after which you will descend to Hunwick’s camp for dinner and overnight.
Day 7: Magherita Camp to Kiharo camp
Start your day by climbing up bridge towards McConnell’s Prong where you are rewarded with stunning views of Mount Stanley, mount Baker and Speke as well as the Scott Elliot pass before reaching Oliver’s pass at 4,505m.
The total distance between Hunwick’s Camp and Oliver’s pass is 3km. The confluence then meanders down the valley to Kiharo camp which is found in a deep valley with high cliffs and dense vegetation. Dinner and overnight stay at the camp.
Day 8: From Kiharo Camp to the base
From Kiharo camp hike along the path following the right pass along the river as you watch duikers as you pass along the river. You shall trek down the river as you cross the rocks then continue steeply watching many waterfalls found a few kilometers down the river till you reach the narrow ridge to bypass steep sections.
You will again meet the river where there is a huge rock shelter and a place to rest for a lunch break. Afterwards, you will cross a small stream as you climb up gentle slopes before turning back down to the river to avoid another set of waterfalls which are impassable.
