Detailed Itinerary of the 5 Days Rwenzori Trekking Tour
Day 1: NYAKALENGIJA – NYABITABA CAMP
The 5 Days Rwenzori Trekking Tour starts at the Nyakalengija base offices. Get there in the morning then prepare and rent equipment then afterwards, you shall meet your guides and porters who brief you about the safari. Later, you shall transfer on hike through farmland to the park boundary following a thick forest along the Mubuku River traversing the Mahima River tributary before starting a long, steep climb up onto a massive ridge to reach Nyabitaba hut. On this hike, you may watch black and white colobus, blue monkey and the brilliantly colored Rwenzori turraco. The hike takes about 6 -7 hours.
Day 2: NYABITABA – JOHN MATTE CAMP
From Nyabitaba proceed on hike via the that drops down through the forest to the Kurt Shafer Bridge just below the confluence of the Mubuku and Bujuku rivers. You shall pass through the bamboo forest, traverse through a long and exhausting stretch of slippery moss-covered rock. From the Nyamuleju rock shelter, you can view Mount Stanley and Mount Speke. Later, you proceed through the giant heather, lobelia and groundsel zones till you reach John Matte Hut passing through the tiring bog, Dinner and Overnight at John Matte Camp. The hike takes an average of 7 – 8 hours.




Day 3: JOHN MATTE – BUJUKU CAMP
From John Matte Hut the trail continues down to traverse the Bujuku River and enter the Lower Bigo Bog zone which consists of giant lobelias. You shall jump from tussock to tussock and when you finish crossing the bigo bog, you shall proceed o hike till you reach Lake Bujuku. On reaching here, you shall have beautiful views of Mt Baker to the South and Mt Stanley to the West. Later, you shall reach Bujuku Hut located in the shadow of Mount Baker and Mount Speke, in a narrow valley below Stuhlmann Pass. This camp is good for acclimatization for clients attempting the summits of peaks Mount Stanley and Mount Speke. Dinner and overnight at Bujuku hut. The hike takes an average of 4 – 5 hours.
Day 4: BUJUKU – MT. SPEKE – BUJUKU – JOHN MAATE
Wake up in the morning then start your hike through stullmans pass watching stunning views of Virunga National park of DR Congo to Victorio Emanuele peak. This ascent takes a period of 4 to 5 hours from Victorio Emanuele with views of Bujuku valley and Lake Bujuku, Margherita and Albert peaks on Mount Stanley, and Mount Baker. You shall then continue to John Matte Camp on a descent of 3 – 4 hours and when you reach here, have Dinner and Overnight.
Day 5: JOHN MAATE – NYABITABA – NYAKALENGIJA
Beneath Guy Yeoman, the route descends the cliffs of Kichuchu crossing the Mubuku River twice through a bamboo forest before climbing downwards to Nyabitaba to finish the circuit. Continue descending Nyabitaba Camp and complete your trek by the evening at Nyakalengija, the base camp. The descent takes 7 – 8 hours.
