7 Days Rwenzori Trekking Tour takes you on trekking adventure to the highest point of Uganda at Margherita Peak where you follow varying routes i.e the Kilembe Trekking Route and Central Circuit Route to get to Margherita Peak.
The Rwenzori trek is an exceptional adventure to take on as you follow rugged, wet and physically demanding hike through glaciers, bogs, forests and alpine landscapes to get to the top of the majestic Mountain.
A normal 7-day Rwenzori Trekking Tour follows the Central Circuit Route known as the most famous route followed in Rwenzori Mountains National Park.

Detailed Itinerary of the 7 Days Rwenzori Trekking Tour
Day 1: Transfer to Nyakalengija (Base Camp)
You shall transfer from Kampala or Entebbe to Kasese for a period of 7 to 8 hours watching the green terrain vegetation, Bird species, lunch etc. You shall then arrive at Nyakalengija (1,450m) where you meet other travelers then be taken through precise briefing about the conduct as you transfer to Margherita Peak. You shall be given trekking gear, meet guides, porters and rangers who you transfer with on your trekking adventure. After briefing, proceed to check-in lodge/ hotel for Dinner and Overnight. Equator Snow Lodge.
Day 2: Nyakalengija – Nyabitaba Hut (2,651m)
After orientation and preparation at Nyakalengija, trekkers shall leave to embark on trek through dense, humid tropical rainforest. The Hike is both physically demanding and visually captivating setting the tone for the days ahead as you traverse rivers and steep ridges watching many primates i.e the colobus monkeys and bird species.
The Hike takes a period of 4 to 5 hours through dense vegetation and muddy trails following steep climbs, humidity, and muddy terrain till you reach Margherita Peak.
The trail winds through towering trees draped in moss, vines, and lianas, creating a primeval jungle atmosphere. You shall watch the Mubuku River a fast-flowing glacial river that cuts through the mountains. After the hike, proceed to the Naybitaba Hut for Dinner and Overnight.
Day 3: Nyabitaba – John Matte Hut (3,505m)
Leaving behind the dense rainforest of Nyabitaba, trekkers descend into deep river valleys before climbing again into a new ecological world of bamboo, heather and moss-covered landscapes. You shall engage in a both physically demanding and visually diverse adventure watching varying terrain vegetation cover till you reach the peak. From Nyabitaba, you shall follow a trail that descends steeply into the valley, dense forest, wet rocks, loose soil, narrow paths.
At the valley floor, trekkers reach the Mubuku River flowing from the glaciers of the Rwenzori Mountains and the features you encounter include; a sturdy wooden or metal bridge crossing, Powerful, fast-moving glacial water and cool, refreshing air rising from the river.
After crossing the river, the trail begins to go upwards through the bamboo forest zone offering you views of Tall, dense bamboo creating a tunnel-like effect, Reduced undergrowth compared to rainforest, cooler and slightly less humid conditions. After a while, you shall reach the John Matte Hit where you have Dinner and Overnight.
Day 4: John Matte – Bujuku Hut (3,962m)
Breakfast then proceed on hike into a high-altitude wilderness of bogs, glacial valleys and giant alien-like plants culminating at the stunning Lake Bujuku.
At this stage, you shall combine the moderate distance with extreme terrain making it physically challenging to conquer. Follow through boggy terrain which makes the hike quite more challenging requiring hikers to be more determined.
You shall then descend into the Bujuku Valley where you watch Mubuku River, walk through rocky terrain and marshy patches as you access a wide glacial valley enfolded by towering peaks. Proceed through the bigo bog a deep mud and waterlogged ground, floating vegetation and Wooden boardwalks (in some sections).
You shall traverse the Bog balancing carefully on narrow wooden planks which require you to step strategically between muddy patches and use trekking poles for stability as you shall proceed through boggy valleys and giant lobelia fields till you reach Lake Bujuku then Bujuku hut for Dinner and Overnight.
Day 5: Bujuku – Elena Hut (4,541m)
Breakfast then leave the surreal bogs and valleys of Bujuku ascending into a harsh alpine environment of rock, ice and thin air. You shall transfer from scenic to serious mountaineering preparation till you reach the base of Margherita Peak. Although shorter in distance, this stage is physically intense due to altitude and steep terrain.
The hike starts in the cold, misty basin close to Lake Bujuku one of the most iconic locations in the Rwenzori Mountains.
You shall proceed on hike steadily out of the valley as the vegetation becomes sparse and the landscape turns rocky and rugged following through verdant alien-like plants towards the high alpine zone where conditions become more extreme as the temperatures drop significantly, winds become stronger, Oxygen levels decrease and vegetation is now minimal due to views of Low mosses and lichens, Scattered hardy plants clinging to rocks.
You continue on hike toward the scott Elliott Pass (4,372m) one of the toughest sections of the day.
At this altitude, even small efforts feel demanding as you experience Headaches, dizziness, Fatigue and Loss of appetite. You shall then embark on the last stretch to Elena Hut as you navigate through rocky paths and ridgelines, maintain balance on un even terrain and push through fatigue and thin air. You shall then reach Elena Hut where you rest, relax and have Dinner and Overnight. This is the launch point for the summit attempt.
Day 6: Summit Attempt (Margherita Peak – 5,109m) – Kitandara Hut
Get up earlier in the freezing darkness before dawn then descend into a distant alpine valley on a long and most demanding day of the trek. This starts at around midnight to 2:00 AM at Elena Hut. You shall layer up your thermal gear, wear crampons and helmets then use headlamps to navigate.
The atmosphere is tense but exciting when you embark on ascent via steep rock slabs before reaching the glaciers of Mount Stanley. Trekkers often move in rope teams under the guidance of experienced mountain guides. You shall use the Crampons for grip, ice axes for balance, Ropes for safety until you reach the Margherita Peak, the highest point in Uganda.
On reaching here, you shall take many stunning photos of the sunrise as it refracts along the snow as well as groups photos to keep for memories. After the adventure, you shall embark on descent to the Kitandara Hut. On reaching here, you rest, have Dinner and Overnight.
Day 7: Descent to Nyakalengija
On the final day of the Mount Rwenzori adventure, you shall embark on steady descent from the high alpine valley zone back to the verdant foothills of Nyakalengija through moorland and forest zones. You shall later return to the base camp where yoy congratulate yourself and other hikers and later proceed back to Kasese or Kampala/ Entebbe Airport for your flight back home.
