Flora (Plant Life) at Rwenzori Mountains
1. Lowland & Montane Forest (1,000–2,500 m)
This zone includes dense tropical rainforest with tall trees like mahogany and fig, Ferns, lianas, and epiphytes (plants growing on other plants). It also includes Bamboo zones in some regions inclusive of rich in mosses due to constant moisture.
2. Bamboo & Heather Zone (2,500–3,000 m)
Bamboo & Heather Zone includes thick bamboo stands, tree heathers covered in hanging moss and transition zone with fewer tall trees.
3. Afro-alpine Zone (3,000–4,500 m)
The Afro-alpine Zone includes Giant lobelias (Lobelia wollastonii), Giant groundsels (Dendrosenecio adnivalis), Tussock grasses and everlasting flowers, Plants adapted to cold nights and intense sun.
4. Nival Zone (Above 4,500 m)
The Nival Zone consists of sparse vegetation inclusive of lichens and hardy mosses close to the glaciers
Fauna around the Mountains
The Rwenzori mountains include mammals which include; African forest elephant (smaller, forest-adapted elephants), Rwenzori colobus monkey, Blue monkey, Bushbuck, Giant forest hog as well as bird species (over 200 species) which include;
the Rwenzori turaco (endemic and very striking), Malachite sunbird, Scarlet-tufted sunbird, Barred long-tailed cuckoo, Reptiles & Amphibians, many endemic chameleons and frogs, High-altitude amphibians adapted to cold, wet environments, Insects, butterflies.
