Kilembe Trekking Route to Margherita Peak – Mount Rwenzori follows from Kilembe to the highest point. The Kilembe Trekking Route to Margherita Peak is managed by RTS who offer hikers the best hiking adventures to the highest point Margherita Peak. 

The Kilembe Trekking Trail (often referred to as the Southern Circuit) is a 7-8 day fully hiking route in Uganda’s Rwenzori Mountains. It is managed by Rwenzori Trekking Services (RTS) and widely known as the most stunning though challenging route to the summit at Margherita Peak. It follows through diverse vegetation zones like the montane forest, bamboo, heather and afro-alpine zones till you reach the summit (Margherita Peak) at 5,109m.

The Kilembe Trekking Trail also referred to as the Southern Circuit, is one of the most scenic and adventurous hiking routes in Rwenzori Mountains National Park. Located in western Uganda near the town of Kasese, the trail offers a rich blend of dramatic landscapes, biodiversity, and mountaineering challenges that make it a top destination for trekkers in East Africa.

The Kilembe Trail was officially opened for tourism in 2009 as another option to the older Central Circuit route. The route starts in the village of Kilembe following the Nyamwamba River valley into the southern slopes of the Rwenzori Mountains. The trail offers Multi-day trekking & mountaineering route
Starting at 2,000 m above sea level requiring a period of 3–8 days depending on itinerary till you reach the summit at Margherita Peak (5,109 m).

The trail is under the management of Rwenzori Trekking Services in partnership with the Uganda Wildlife Authority and includes description as it follows a Southern approach to Mount Stanley as it ascends through many ecological zones and camps which include; Sine Hut (2,585 m), Kalalama Camp (3,147 m), Mutinda Camp (3,688 m), Bugata Camp (4,062 m), Butawu Camp (3,974 m), Margherita Camp (4,485 m).

Following this trail, trekkers usually ascend to Margherita Peak and descend via the same or an alternative route on a 7–8 Day Itinerary which includes;

Day 1–2: Forest & bamboo zones to Mutinda Camp

Day 3–4: Alpine vegetation and high passes

Day 5–6: Glacier zone and summit attempt

Day 7–8: Descent back to base

Landscape and Vegetation Zones

Tropical Rainforest Zone

The Tropical Rain Forest Zone consists of dense vegetation with ferns, moss and tall trees. These inhabit monkeys and birds and includes muddy and steep terrain.

Bamboo Forest Zone

Bamboo Forest Zone comprises of Thick bamboo vegetation which inhabits many wildlife animals like duikers and chameleons. The atmosphere here is
cool and misty.

Heather & Moorland Zone

Heather & Moorland Zone includes Giant heathers and lobelias as well as open terrain landscapes with stunning views.

Afro-alpine & Glacier Zone

Afro-alpine & Glacier Zone includes snow, ice and glaciers close to the summit with unique high-altitude plants and rock formations.

Attractions Along the Trail

The Kilembe Trekking Trail comprises of scenic highlights and natural beauty which include; the Mutinda Lookout – panoramic views of valleys and peaks, Sine & Bugata Waterfalls – picturesque rest points, Lake Kopello – serene alpine lake, Glaciers and snow-capped peaks near Mount Stanley, Scott Elliot Pass – historic and dramatic high-altitude crossing.

Along the trail, you can access other peaks which include; Mount Baker, Speke and Stanley.

Wildlife and Biodiversity

While climbing the Rwenzori Mountains via the Kilembe Trail, you shall watch unique biodiversity which includes; the Rwenzori turacos, sunbirds and barbets,
Three-horned chameleons, Forest elephants (rare sightings), many primates and small mammals. There are also endemic plant species you can watch and these include; giant lobelias and groundsels.

Best Time to Visit and Hike Rwenzori Mountains via Kilembe Trail

The best Rwenzori trekking season is during the months of June to August and December to February as there is less rainfall, clearer views and safer navigation.
