Central Circuit Route to Margherita Peak is amazing to follow on hiking adventure along Mount Rwenzori. The Central Circuit Route to Margherita Peak starts at Nykalengija base camp following through terrain vegetation till you reach the highest point in Uganda. 

The Rwenzori Central Circuit Trail is an exceptional adventure along the Rwenzori Mountains requiring you a period of 7–9 days to finish. The route is known as the classic route following a basic path till you reach Margherita Peak (5,109m) on Mount Stanley. It is under the management of Rwenzori Mountaineering Services (RMS) and covers a distance of 58-kilometers through five distinct vegetation zones i.e montane forest, bamboo and Afro-alpine heather offering beautiful views of Mount Stanley, Mount Speke and Mount Baker.

The Central Circuit Trail is the oldest and most established trekking route along the Rwenzori Mountains. The route is also known as the “classic route,” offering a circular journey through the heart of the Rwenzori Mountains also known as the “Mountains of the Moon.” This trail adds breathtaking scenery, diverse ecosystems and access to some of Africa’s highest peaks i.e Margherita Peak.

The Central Circuit Trail starts at Nyakalengija base camp close to the town of Kasese looping through the mountain range before returning to the starting point. it starts at an elevation of 1,600 m requiring travelers a period of 6–9 days to hike to the highest point at Margherita Peak (5,109 m). It is under the management of Rwenzori Mountaineering Services in partnership with Uganda Wildlife Authority. This trail is ideal for trekkers aiming to summit Mount Stanley or explore the central peaks of the Rwenzori range.

Route Description

The Central Circuit is designed as a progressive ascent and descent loop offering trekkers to experience various terrain landscapes without retracing their steps following major Camps Along the Route like Nyabitaba Hut (2,651 m), John Matte Hut (3,414 m), Bujuku Hut (3,962 m), Elena Hut (4,541 m), Kitandara Hut (4,023 m), Guy Yeoman Hut (3,261 m). Each hut serves as a resting and acclimatization point.

Vegetation Zones and Landscapes

The Central Circuit Trail is prominently known for its dramatic ecological zones which include; Montane Forest Zone with dense forest inclusive of tall trees and moss, wildlife species i.e monkeys, birds. It also has the bamboo Zone with thick bamboo stands, cooler and misty conditions. The Heather Zone
with Giant heather trees and open terrain landscapes. Moorland Zone with giant lobelias and groundsels, swampy, boggy terrain. The Alpine & Glacier Zone with snow, ice, and glaciers as well as rugged rock formations. These zones make climbing Mountain Rwenzori a very exceptional adventure for all hikers from all over the world.

While trekking along the Central Circuit, you shall watch attractions like Lake Bujuku – one of Africa’s highest lakes, Mount Stanley – home to Margherita Peak, Mount Speke and Mount Baker, Moss-covered valleys and waterfalls as well as unique afro-alpine vegetation that make photographic safaris very exceptional.

The Rwenzori Mountains host many floral and faunal species which include; over 200 bird species i.e Rwenzori turaco, reptiles like the three-horned chameleons, Primates such as colobus monkeys and rare alpine plant species.
Best Time to Visit

The best Time to Trek the Rwenzori Mountains

Rwenzori Mountains can be trekked anytime around the year although the best time to hike the Mountain is during the dry season in the months of June to August and December to February. During these periods, the trails are less muddy, visibility is clearer, Summit success rates are higher as navigation via the trails is less complicated. However, rain can occur at any time due to the mountain’s equatorial climate.

Sample 7 Days Central Circuit Itinerary

Day 1: Nyakalengija – Nyabitaba Hut

Transfer through farmland and dense forest, crossing rivers as you encounter primates en-route.

Day 2: Nyabitaba – John Matte Hut

Descend into the Bujuku Valley then cross the Mubuku River.

Day 3: John Matte – Bujuku Hut

Traverse boggy terrain till you reach Lake Bujuku

Day 4: Bujuku – Elena Hut

Steep climb toward Mount Stanley
Prepare for summit attempt

Day 5: Summit attempt & descend to Kitandara

Climb to Margherita Peak. Then descend via glaciers and rocky terrain.

Day 6: Kitandara – Guy Yeoman Hut

Cross Freshfield Pass enjoying scenic views of valleys and peaks

Day 7: Descend back to Nyakalengija
